I was a waiter for over two decades. The stereotype is absolutely true but I pulled out some ridiculous tips from black tables too by shucking and jiving with the best of them. My favorite part of the job was seeing otherwise super liberal, young women, come within millimeters of saying the word nigger after getting stiffed on a $350 check that ran them to death and complained the whole time.

Very rarely would anyone stiff you and you could see it coming from a mile away regardless of race. I get the no tipping sentiment from some people but they’re usually the most vocal when you’re under no obligation to tip outside of the awkwardness of another human being snapping and asking why you didn’t tip.

The one thing I’d point out to anyone, even the non tippers, is that most average places, all the way up to fine dining make servers tip out on sales. The last place I worked it was 3.5% on food. So if you came in and spent $300 and left nothing, I had to pay out $10.50 to the house on your food total and more went to the bar just for you sitting in my section.

It’s a hectic way to make cash depending on where you work but it also takes very little skill to get into a place where you’re making $35-$50 an hour. The only downside is having to smile while a table is sending food back for the third time, insinuating that you’re racist to your boss and then stiffing you after getting 75% of their shit comped.
