Just saw Ray Wilson on TV

You may remember me from an hour ago when I watched an episode of Criminal Intent and randomly saw Pat's arch enemy on it and made a thread about it in LitCrit.

Now I'm watching the latest episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks, it's not good, and during their lineup segment where they get a has been to stand in a line and the others has to guess who it is, guess who it was? Ray fucking Wilson. Literally the only reason I know who it is is because of this place and I immediately recognized which one he was.

Seriously. What are the fucking odds that I first see Adam Mucci in that episode of Criminal Intent and then an hour later see this? Now I know for sure that God is real and that he's a Pat poster.

My schedule was open during their recording schedule, and it was just a fun little bit to do. Greg, Daisy and Noel were all sweethearts, and I don't mind the piss being taken out of me.

When we were getting torched in the reviews for the album, I tried to hang on to any kindness I could find. One of the nicest ones was a reviewer who basically said Genesis finally found a replacement for Peter Gabriel. It was then followed by a slight knock, but I still appreciated the comparison, and it helped during the first very rough few months.

But despite the kicks to the head I took, it doesn't compare to how personally Tony and Mike took all of it. Nir and I felt like we were on an island in a way, just the new guys who were basically looked at as hired help. For them, Genesis was the majority of their life, and they went from being prog Rock darlings to a pop supergroup to being told they should shut it down. I felt awful for them during that, and despite how the bands management (you know who you are, you wrinkly fucking cunt) treated me after, I don't blame Mike or Tony for any of that. Especially Tony and all the kindness he showed me.

But, you know, their Twitter did wish me a happy birthday a few days ago, so hey... it's progress.

I used to watch that show like a decade ago, the part that always made me cringe is when they'd get these 60 year old washouts out with kind words like "...and working on his new album for next year, give it up for Lewis Martell" or some shit like that, which were obvious lies.

Now obviously Ray is the exception and I mean that with zero sarcasm whatsoever. But still, I wonder what they said about our good 'ol pal and how he feels about it.

When they showed me their choices to go out there - because I did have some say in that - I couldn't stop laughing. And I'm sure the edited product is quite condensed from the full record (I haven't watched the finished episode yet), but I thought the bit was great. I didn't take anything personal by it.

I'm 55 years old and grateful to still be making music. To take the piss out of a few years of my life like that was cathartic in a humorous way. I just hope the whole thing came across as funny as I thought it was.
