DMT is what your brain produces to make you dream and help shut the body down for REM sleep so it's not unthinkable that, in some cases, this might happen because most responses the body has to trauma is to shut down, like how a boxer's once granite chin goes all weak after the first KO. The body teaches itself to shut down when it happens again. One reason that some people who take psychoactive drugs regularly don't have many dreams is because your system can be tricked by the THC into inhibiting or not releasing it while you sleep. This is also why if you stop smoking grass for the 1st time in ages you'll have the most mental lucid dreams of your life because it comes back with a vengeance.
