I don’t know how people do it without making a mess out of it. I’ve found laying masking tape on each side you lay the bead, for instance the tub and the wall, makes for much easier cleanup when smoothing it since it all goes onto the tape.

It’s extra work but I’m so shit at caulking it’s worth it for me

I am the worst caulker in the world
Legitimately awful, I can point out a few instances of me completely fucking it up. If you’re ever in the second floor men’s bathroom at [redacted] you’ve seen possibly the worst “professionally” done caulk job ever. I thought my boss was going to fire me on the spot.

Same principle but much quicker: soapy water in a sprayer. Lay your bead, then spray the area before you smooth it. Caulk won't stick to it, just make sure to keep your finger or tool wet as well.
