How should I play this negotiation?

Some guy out of the blue contacted me to buy a domain name I registered a few months ago. It all checks out, he’s a real person running a real small business/side hustle. His opening offer was $2500US. Nothing super special about the name, it doesn’t even have a website attached. A similar name is for sale for $5000.

How do I get maximum return value without blowing the sale and having him walk? This domain cost me $10 and I have no plans of using it in the future.

I say use a foot-in-the-door strategy and make a counter offer of $1,799. He won't see it coming.

Counter with 3500 and say you're not flexible, already have someone else asking at 3k.
That’s the only issue is that it’s such a niche, random name that I don’t know if that angle would play. I thought he was gonna offer like $150 when he said, “I’ve got a number in mind, don’t be insulted if it’s too low.”

What are you comfortable asking for? $2500 feels like a good offer although I don’t know the domain name market. If you chase this guy away, are there other potential buyers and would they offer a similar number?

Personally, I’d sell it and move on, then I’d buy a box full of glitter and ship it to Norton just to be a funster.
Zero market. Zero offers. I’ve sold a website before for 10k but it had a business brand attached to it. But that was also just some random guy that reached out to me because he liked the instagram handle and I turned that into a deal to buy the entire brand, which was nothing more than a few hundred followers on most social platforms.

I’m having a hard time reading it this guy is just no nonsense and is putting his last best offer first or if there is five figures just waiting to be taken from a guy with more cash than brains.
