I will be the first to admit that Opie is purely evil and willing to do anything for the bit, he makes up for his lack of one liners. Opie would not have let Kevin Brennan break microphones and cut the power. Anthony was a scared child at a loss for words. You can see his eyes darting around, waiting for the other guy to step in and take control. But unfortunately the other guy isn't there.

When they were interviewed by Bill O'Reilly, Anthony began to resemble a naughty student being scolded by the principal. Ant couldn't muster up a word while Bill was just laying claims all over him. Opie swoops in and challenges Bill head on. So Opie didn't crack jokes on Letterman, big deal... he steers the ship when it counts.

Now it’s genuine Opie love. I’ve said it before, a lot at this point, but, go back to the 2010-2014 era. Opie shines way more than any of them. When Anthony was left to his own devices, he just complained about niggers and retarded shit. Opie was the only one pushing for funny bits, which during that era, was fucking with the retards. He pushed bits before, just back then “The Hang”, was funnier, which he also pushed for. Opie Hate was fun bandwagon bullying. We were piling on because we all had prior knowledge of his weak points and hyper focused on them with the help of some of Anthony's hate manipulation.

Opie may have clammed up a bit on Leno, but other than that he was mostly fearless as the spokesman for the show. Because he had less self awareness, thus less inhibition. He had less of a sense of humor about the show being insulted, because Anthony Pushover and Doormat Norton wouldn't speak up.

Ope pushed forward his 50% of the show well, he didn't and couldn't contribute to the 50% that Anthony brought which was voices impressions and someone to bounce back with small talk about Opie's topics. What you see now is Anthony's 50% without Opie's hard-headed autism and guidance. And it's half a show. And it fucking stinks. Gavin is trying to help Ant steer the ship but he hates Opie so he doesn't get it either in the end.

Opie wasn’t funny which is the ultimate sin to be these assholes.

Before I defend him in other ways, I have to say, there were times he was funny. It’s a lie to say he was never funny. It’s just a lie.

Few and far between, sure. But listening back over old shows, because I’m still a faggot, I’m surprised at how often a bit was started because of something he said. A comment, an observation, and Jimmy and Anthony ran away with it, which was their job.

He provided structure and an environment in which Anthony and Jimmy and others could be funny.

They criticize him by calling him a programming director. Actually, that probably would’ve been the best role late in their run. Let Opie run things, reduce his role on the air, and be funny in the environment he created.

We could hate some of the individual producers all we want, but as a group they were good at their job. They provided material every single day that Anthony and Jimmy could be funny with. Opie brought up topics every single day that Jimmy and Anthony could be funny with.

And if the control freak wasn’t the one that picked those producers, then I’d be shocked.

For as often as he derailed bits, and he did, he also kept them from running on too long at times. More often than people realize. Look at what they do without him. They ramble on and on and on, just like I’m doing now, with diminishing return.


That format required urgency, of trying to be funny as quickly as you can before the next break, and that mattered. The pacing, the tempo, moving on, that mattered.

And people criticize all of the outrageous stupid bits that we cringe about now, but those were essential for new listeners transitioning from regular boring old radio. It worked. It undeniably worked because some of their most popular years, some of the years the show grew the most, they did a number of those stupid bits. Also the radio wars he started. The complaining about other shows. It created an “us against them“ environment that bred loyalty in the listeners.
Not every listener has refined comedic tastes, they’re going to want wasps stinging balls, whores in drums of garbage, and so on.

The emergence or creation, or whatever it was, of the pests, was vitally important to the health of that show and a lot of that was inspired by the image of their brand, by fighting other shows, and creating the environment that inspired loyalty from the listeners.

I mean, Jesus Christ, the show has been over for a decade and look at how popular old clips are on YouTube.

That absolutely was the best radio show on the planet for a number of years. And he was a big part of why.

There’s certainly an audience for it. This was during the period of time that their audience was building on XM. Not my cup of tea, I liked the silly, absurd stuff, but it *worked* for growing the show.

He gets way too little credit for the role he played.
