She did but not often enough, maybe 5x a month. I was a latchkey kid starting at 9 and would cook my own meals after school. So your mum never cooked for you?
My mum cooked, I never once bought anything from the school cafeteria, always had home-cooked meals and the PBJ + Wonder bread kids would ENVY the oil stains on the bottom of my lunchbag. She did not not often enough, maybe 5x a month. Is that a common thing in America? I've only ever seen it in movies. I don't live in a third world country so we got food from our school, we didn't have cafeterias where you had to buy food. Eat as much as you want and the food was great. My mum cooked, I never once bought anything from the school cafeteria, always had home-cooked meals and the PBJ + Wonder bread kids would ENVY the oil stains on the bottom of my lunchbag.
Sounds like prison, child...Is that a common thing in America? I've only ever seen it in movies. I don't live in a third world country so we got food from our school, we didn't have cafeterias where you had to buy food. Eat as much as you want and the food was great.
Having to buy food from a cafeteria/commissary? Yeah.Sounds like prison, child...
My school had 3 options and they depended on your family household income. You either paid full price ($3) reduced price ($1) or free. I was stuck paying full price simply because both of my parents a job.Is that a common thing in America? I've only ever seen it in movies. In my schools the portions were the same from kindergarten to 12th gradeMy school had 3 options and they depended on your family household income. You either paid full price ($3) reduced price ($1) or free. I was stuck paying full price simply because both of my parents a job.
This was back in early 2000s though. I'm sure the same program exists, but probably costs more.
For $3 it was a decent lunch. From 4th grade until I graduated highschool we had proper cafeterias with different sections with different food. Usually a pizza section that had pizza sticks and shitty mama Celeste style pizza. There was an area for cold or hot subs and another section that was chicken nuggets and fries. There was also an area for snacks like cookies and canned juices. It was actually pretty decent for my upbringing.
This was because my city fell into receivership in the early 90s and the city schools ended up getting taken over by the state and was run by Boston University so tons of money went into everything. It expired after a decade I believe.
I remember our report cards could come in the mail and maybe the symbols for Boston University written on the envelope which was always strange looking.
I'm sure that shit ruled as a kid but I can't help but laugh reading this and remembering there's people who earnestly wonder how the US got an obesity epidemic. For $3 it was a decent lunch. I was thinking the same thing. About how that would've ruled as a kid. At my school it was meat, spuds, 2 (overcooked) veg and gravy half the time. Lot of cottage pie etc. An "exotic" day was pasta, tomato sauce and turkey meatballs or the most basic chicken curry and rice. As much as you wanted though. Pretty bland stuff (breakfast and afternoon tea was much better than lunch and supper) but looking back there were like 2 fat boys out of 100 in my year, and these days they wouldn't probably even be considered fat.I'm sure that shit ruled as a kid but I can't help but laugh reading this and remembering there's people who earnestly wonder how the US got an obesity epidemic.
