Evil Dead Rise

Let's be honest, the Evil Dead movies revolutionized horror films. The first 3 were great (the best being 2>Army of Darkness>1>first remake).

Holy shit is Evil Dead Rise a bad movie.

I knew it would be shit when I saw it was an Hour and a half film. Alot of gore, which when I was younger was a great thing.

Does getting older refine your taste? I used to love slasher movies, but now they are just cheese.

Anyhow, the movie takes place in some dilapidated apartment with maybe 4 residents total. It is a "bank", which during an earthquake. Mind you absolutely no emergency services arrived. There are now 3 books of the dead (actually was a pretty cool part when they played the record). And then it devolves into a special effects presentation. The ending was super lame, all the dead people conglomerates into a big creature that is ultimately killed. Because all apartments have a handy wood chipper downstairs.

It ends with some random resident waking up and walking into the garage . Never mind the attacks, blood, and earthquake. This bitch slept straight through.

Honestly (I would tell ya), the last good horror movie I saw was The Witch. Haven't seen Hereditary yet, off the fact I don't like watching movies where children and animals are killed. Its a cheap trick used by filmmakers to "see how edgy we are"

Way too many potholes, and it appeals to the man children who just can let go.

Don't watch it, its terrible

Evil Dead is a masterpiece in low-budget horror filmmaking.
I never understood everyone's obsession with ED2 or Army of Darkness. Camp isn't that fun when its so selfaware.
Needless to say the remake of 1 was surprisingly good, even though it was a little too on the nose about making women le heckin cool badasses.
Which is why I won't see Evil Dead Rise.

The setting in an apartment was honestly a cool idea, but it's wasted on another generic shitty horror movie that's really only Evil Dead in name. Unless Sam Rami is on board to director another they will continue to be shit most likely.

In what way? Saw is a better example of low budget horror influencing everything. Or Cube which was way more impactful on horror as tons of comics, video games, movies, and shows, reference it. Even Blairwitch Project caused a torrent of copycat films with shaky cameras and screaming maniac protagonists. Or those stupid Paranormal Activity films.

You realize that Evil Dead was basically a ripoff of Equinox from 1970? And it's not even the original 'cabin the woods' film?

They did this in the Spanish film 'Rec.' where it was inside a big apartment building. That movie had a pretty good twist ending (then got franchised to death with a half dozen sequels). That movie also had the budget to have lots of people in the building.

There are only so many places you can have your 'haunted house' movie and none of them are original anymore. There are horror movies on oil platforms, spaceships, cabins in the woods, military bases, WWII submarines, prisons, and so on. The problem with doing a haunted house movie in an apartment building is explaining why no one is going in and out of the building. Rec. did that by making the government quarantine the building with police.

Checkov's Wood Chipper. What's that?

They've pretty much bled the franchise dry at this point.

You’re a long winded ass, but I like ya

I do agree with you, let's just say Evil Dead had a lot more notoriety. The general public is not going to deep dive into the original films that birthed it.

What you said just made me think of the whole influx of shit Slasher movies. And that was because of Giallo films.

My main problem is everything felt really rushed. "here is a brief introduction for the Mom and Sister, now let's open the book". Slow burn movies are always good. I do wish more time was spent on character development. Otherwise, the effects take front and center.

What did you all think about the "callbacks" to the original Evil Dead? There was alot of that movie that seemed just to be time filler for the next big effects.

The original was brutal, that is what made it so appealing.

Damn Rec was good. Rec 2 was meh, except for the cult one. That was better than any story from Rec

(Edit: Im totally thinking of another "found footage film". Please call me out on my bullshit.)

YT will not let me link it for some reason, but im sure you know exactly what im talking about.

Where do you think Horror movies are headed? Are we into a drought? Got any good recommendations?

This is a problem with every movie currently. The characters are all just standard variations of the typical cast. The strong woman, the jock douchebag, the token black, the uppity female nigger, the token fag, the frightened person who is secretly dangerous. So the writers don't even bother to give these characters backstories or anything unique. You just know "oh this is the female empowerment character" and this is the "out of his depth old man character". They might as well not even name the characters anymore.

Look at Alien and how long the film takes to actually get to the alien ship. They spend the first hour building up the characters and the world. Or even something like Terminator where the beginning is Sarah waiting tables and hanging with her roommate. Now horror films always begin with a kill. Even The Thing and Predator had the reveal of the spaceship coming to earth right at the beginning so audiences have no doubt what they are watching. There is no depth anymore.

If you watch Righteous Gemstones on HBO they take many episodes to give you the backstories of each character. One of the main female leads is still a total mystery (Aimee Lee). It makes the world feel more real and alive despite it being an absurd and silly comedy. The characters are written like a history book or biography.

Total oversaturation of low budget films and rehashes. And endless unofficial remakes of horror films like Cloverfield ripping off Miracle Mile or Midsommar ripping off Wicker Man. And lots of really bad horror franchise television shows where they will ruin classic stuff like Alien, Predator, Halloween, and Hellraiser and so on.

I would just go back and watch stuff like Pin, Cube, Audition, and try to find other low budget or obscure horror movies.

True Detective season four is coming to HBO and supposedly has more horror elements like the first season.

Oh wow, is True Detective being written by the same guy? Forgot his name off the top of my head.

Appreciate the recommendations by the way
