The character Newman played was based on John Looney (pronounced Lowney usually) a gangster in the Quad Cities area. There's a pretty decent book, Citadel of Sin that covers his criminal career. Pretty interesting stuff. At one point the guy bought a paper just to contradict another one in town that was (accurately) reporting about him being a crook.
