Dice vs Jackie Martling

UnPRePared

For the last time, I am NOT Donal Logue!
Except Fred, leave it alone with that closet case.

Fred was sharp as hell with his barbs and timing, but bloody hell, you turned the tables on him... WHOA.

There was one time Howard spent a half hour talking about Fred's weirdness between commercial breaks and after the show, everything from using two watches so he could use digital for logging commercials while looking at the analog because he preferred it, and the certain way he'd put away drops. Fred was attacking everyone who joined into the beating with reckless abandon, like a rabbit bulldog. Yet he had that same viciousness when it came to protecting Howard, too. He knew that was the meal ticket.

Meanwhile, Jackie just wanted his rightful money. And I think he DID know that the ugly wigged cunt was his meal ticket, too, but he hoped when things fell out from under, he could still make it on his own. Not quite true, sadly, but anyone who says the show didn't change or was just as good when Jackie left either never listened to the old days or is a fucking liar.

He ruined so many riffs with mashing the same drop over and over. “Ack ack” and that “iyiYIH” Jackie one. Shut up stupid, one drop was more than enough. He did seemingly back Artie’s lies to a fault but I can live with that. Howard playing the “well I guess I’m the only one who always believes him” game just showed that he cared more about da show than Artie. Can’t necessarily fault him on that one but it’s very transparent if you read between the lines.

Jackie didn't just want money. He also wanted a writing credit and plugs for his gigs written into the contract so that they were guaranteed. Howard didn't like it when people got credit for writing because then it exposed that his jokes were not original but handed to him by other people. But this made no sense as you could literally see Jackie hand Howard jokes throughout the E! Show. Howard got extremely upset because Jackie said that Howard could not be as funny without him and that 'Howard Stern' on the air was just Jackie's lines with Howard's voice. And that Howard without Jackie writing for him would not work out. Howard replaced Jackie with a handful of writers including Benjy being in studio but the writers would no longer hand him notes but would put the lines on a monitor so it looked like Stern wasn't being fed funny lines. They used to have to turn the lights off to Jackie's booth in the studio during the E! Show because Jackie refused to sign the contract with them unless he was credited as "writer".

Also Jackie's meal ticket was his standup. Artie made more on standup during his Stern years than getting paid by WXRK or Sirius. Lots of others on Stern tried to get side gigs like Gary or John or Fred's band. But Jackie and Artie were legit comedians and TV performers because joining Stern. And they knew how to build audiences without Howard. Them getting plugs made sense as it allowed them to skip doing plugs on local radio shows where their next gig was. But when someone like Stuttering John would plug his 'gigs' it was clearly him leeching off of the Stern audience to make a quick buck.

Howard once had a huge rant that he hated how all of the staff on the show were putting in plugs into the show for their gigs and shut it down completely. So no more King Norris plugs or Gary doing an appearance at a bar or whatever. This was an early preview of his Pelican Brief hysteria.

Jackie also quit around Howard's divorce which really changed the show as well. There were some other weird things behind the scenes at Stern as well. Like he apparently had lawyers lobby the FCC to make his show immune from those 'equal time' political laws where you must interview Democrats and Republicans equally. And Howard's first few years at Sirius were disasters and directionless (and he has arguably never recovered).

I know that Norton was mocked by Patrice as "taking the shape of whatever container you pour him into". But Stern was like that as well. His first wife got him into all sorts of weird nonsense like meditation and these quack doctors. He took on the personality of his wife Beth and all of her hobbies as well and is now crazy cat lady.

Also this thread was started about Dice. But now we are talking about Jackie and Stern. Proving that Dice is not even relevant in this own threads.

I also like that he wrote the most insulting things that the Jackie Puppet ever said to him. Jackie even was the one who brought the puppet to the show. But knew that if he brought it himself Howard would reject it. So he had the guy who made the puppet show up randomly and pretended he was offended by it which caused Howard to make it a regular bit. But meanwhile Jackie said that the puppet was one of the his favorite bits on the entire show.

Billy operating the puppet and insulting Conan is probably a top five Stern moment.
