Yeah, sometimes employees get pissed off when their boss tells them what to do. Lol
June 1998: O&A nearly lost their careers for the first time (of many) the month before this, thanks to Menino not being a good sport... O&A got lucky and Infinity/CBS signed them despite backlash -- to a more lucrative deal, in a prime timeslot with major exposure. Less than 5 months later, Opie is on WNEW airwaves TRASHING the radio station and a campaign they dedicated 24/7 of their programming to: The Evolution of The Rock of New York.
Five months into his job, Opie walks in and throws his weight around. Because he knows better. He doesn't wanna play records. He wants to TALK SHIT -- ALL DAY LONG. He wanted to be on K-Rock, but CBS refused to let O&A be on with Stern, because Stern knew O&A even back then due to Brother Wease having warned him about Opie. Guess what? A few months later Infinity/CBS completely caved to Opie's demands and literally flipped WNEW's format from rock music to exactly what Opie wanted... All SHOCK JOCK talk, all day long. Opie grabbed WNEW and remolded it into his own image. His bosses feared him... a guy who walked in 5 months before.
Opie was legendary in 2000 for being a total asshole. When Ron & Fez arrived at WNEW, they were told horror stories about Opie, and not Anthony. They made a point to say that years later, it was only Opie who people whined about. And then they got to the studio, and found out that Opie stayed at the station all night after his show just because he wanted to meet the legendary Ron & Fez, whom Opie used to listen to tapes of in the 80's because he was a dedicated student of the game who had a passion for the genre of shit-talking that Ron & Fez were so excellent at. And that's why Opie always "ballwashed" Ronnie B... The DMAN calls it respecting his elders. The Ron & Ron Show with Fezzie as the third mic sounded EXACTLY like Opie & Anthony with Norton, nearly 30 years earlier down in Florida.
Opie ran a tight ship. He started the show. He was the visionary, he was the engineer, the board-op (not an insult) he made decisions on the format and came up with 75% of the bits. He took inspiration from Ron & Ron & Fez and Howard, and all the greats. Opie's on-air pitches were enhanced by Aintfunny's contributions from his own demented mind... But Opie was the creative driving force. Auntie was the commentator with quips and noises who did a good job being Robin Quivers and Billy West rolled into one. That was the dynamic. And from day 1, Opie had a backbone, confidence, KNEW his worth. When someone tried to bully Opie and they didn't know him, they ended up getting a big fawking surprise.
The DMAN considers himself honest to a fault. Not like those people who just say that to cover for their asshole behavor. But in reality, The DMAN will trash somebody who is standing 5 feet away from him. And if he doesn't realize they're around, once he does in fact realize it, he's not one of those people who freezes up and gets embarrassed like Aintfunny Cumia. The DMAN has actually walked up and started confronting the person just to get over that awkwardness of getting caught BY them talking ABOUT them. You might think it's autistic, but it's better than being ashamed of yourself, venting about someone without addressing it to them. If someone catches The DMAN talking shit about them, it's likely something they already got snapped at about by the very source himself.
Part of the reason why The DMAN is such an Opie-maniac is that he identifies with Opie's outlook on defending one's self. Look, when your name is Opie... Sometimes you gotta do a little extra to keep the dirt off your name. Yeah, he went overboard sometimes and became disliked because he was confrontational. But the guy had a passion, and a great point every time he did it. And half the time, he was overcompensating because his name is Opie... But it worked out. HE GOT HIS WAY.
Conversely, Aintfunny would nigger-rant, but it solved nothing. It was mildly amusing at worst, just like Opie's management rants. The DMAN always thought those boring rants were funny on some level. It was just Aintfunny venting to his captive audience. Opie's rants were solving problems by peer pressuring bosses into doing as Opie pleased, ESPECIALLY when they wronged O&A. Management always undermined O&A, but it accelerated once XM merged into Sirius and the new ownership had no ties to O&A.
The fact of the matter is, interns and lowly employees like Aintfunny and Stupid Norton grew a resentment toward Opie because he ALWAYS knew better and he always got his way in the end. They were JEALOUS of the fact that Opie was willing to stick up for himself and others, that he knew what he was talking about but maybe wasn't able to articulate it in a way that they would, and something they couldn't do because they never want to "make themselves feel uncomfortable."
As Opie said many times, he LOVED being uncumftubble and doing it to others. And that is why he exceled in shock jock radio without the ability to make cuckold gay porn wordplay one-liners like the two other guys who literally ended up being unfunny tranny porn gooners with no careers or marketability without the residual heat that comes off of being associated with Opie the entertainment-business visionary. There are little kids on TikTok who are making millions of dollars doing what Opie did 30 years ago. Get yourself some attention doing something stupid, maintain it and stick with it until it gets More Gooder... Fawking marketing 101.
It takes true balls to speak truth to power, even if you have Fuck You money, to call your boss a fucking dope in a corporate setting loud enough for everyone to know it, and being willing to say it to them if they ask you about it. The DMAN has ripped a few plays straight from Opie. You know what happens? He ends up getting awarded distinctions because he ONLY DOES IT when he has a point and when he can back himself up with numbahs. He changes things for the better, especially when you got some fawking dwopes coming along playing the fake tough guy act like they're gonna make believe they do things THEIR way. Neh Neh Neh Neh Nah. We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way... And sometimes: The DMAN prefers doing things the hard way. That's what we do now.
Or we could just crack open another beer and let a retired cop manage our podcast network. And Punt
