I’ll have to fawkin check that out

Please don’t. I’ll genuinely feel awful if someone else reads it. I only did the once because of a dare, and I’ve never forgiven the person who set that dare.

I’m not even all that squeamish or sunshine-and-rainbows (I’m here, aren’t I), and I can hack a sad or grim read now and then, but fucking hell, that book still makes me ill just thinking about it. Can't remember how or why I finished it, even to win a stupid bet, it wasn't worth it.

The gore or acts aren’t even the worst of it, though they’re fucking horrific. It’s the psychological state the kids get in, and how they basically lose all humanity or faith over what amounts to extreme sadomasochism gone wrong.

This book is considered unadaptable to film for universal basic morality and common decency reasons. Says it all.

I know that everyone knows about his Cthulhu mythology ( they might not have read them, but they have at least heard of them ), but Lovecraft, being a pulp writer, wrote a number of really good, really effective short horror stories.

My personal favorite is "The Music of Erich Zann". Excellent use of atmosphere and mastery of language to create a sense of dread about a menace that remains unseen to the reader. It's brilliant.

Despite him being a giant faggot I really like old Stephen King stuff. Especially his short stories. Skeleton Crew is great. #AmReading
Absolutely. King was great until the mid 80s when he started believing his own hype. His short story collections, as you stated, are King at his best because, in his heart, he really is a pulp writer.

King said every horror story is a variation on OP's three, with the addition of ghost stories. Shinkleboutit.

(I don't know enough to have an opinion on this; I just remember reading it from king.)
I think that he wrote that in Danse Macabre, which is one of the very few King novels i actually re-read. A very thorough, non-fiction history of horror.
