We aren't allowed to cut down our own trees, either. Even if it's clearly dying and about to fall and crush something or somebody we have to ask permission which involves paying thousands of dollars to an arborist and some government prick to verify that yes, this could kill someone.

The municipality level corruption in Canada is wild. I once won a civil case against the city, and then a year later they raised my property taxes by the same amount I won in my case...almost to the cent.
