I want to get my brother a book for his birthday. Something that will make me think that I've chosen it especially for him.

He likes mostly fiction, but also non-fiction on the history of war. Medieval battles and slightly nerdy things like that. Books that have been made into movies are not a bad option. Last time we talked on the phone (six months ago) he talked about Shindler's Ark quite a bit. Maybe something about a lesser-known war? Something where some real sick shit went down?

He's got a pretty decent sense of humour. He's also a bodybuilding.com guy. Apparently, the pipeline for memes is: 4chan --> bodybuilding.com --> onaforums -->reddit ---> Facebook. Who knew?

Basically, anything that would fool him into thinking I had chosen it especially would be good.

(I'm not getting him a Samuel Delany novel so don't even start)

not sure what to recommend specifically, but if you're gifting someone a book, get a really nice copy from somewhere like easton press or folio society. not something from books a million. even if it's a book you already know they like, they'll have a nice one to put on display if nothing else

If he's at all interested in this sort of thing (historical fiction, Japanese culture/history), Shogun by James Clavell is pretty good. They just made a Hulu (I think) series about it that I have not watched yet so I can't vouch for it. Not a whole lot happens in the last 1/4 of the book but the first 3/4 are great and a pretty brisk read despite being 1,000 or so pages. Bonus enjoyment if your cocksucker of a brother knows any basic Japanese and/or fetishizes subservient Japanese women.

edit: let me add this, since Folio society was mentioned, get your brother this: https://www.foliosociety.com/usa/blood-meridian.html

Timeline by Michael Crichton might be up his alley. Team of scientists time travel to 13th century France and get involved in medieval shenanigans including a siege. Pretty fun read.

The hipster hitler annual is a nice light-hearted coffee table book. I know Ken Follett is considered good for historic based fiction if you want something serious.

A good recent non-fiction book that is war-adjacent is Say Nothing.

"Say Nothing's subject is The Troubles in Northern Ireland, with the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville as a central focus. The book describes the lives of Dolours Price, Brendan Hughes, Gerry Adams, and Jean McConville's children. Through these figures, it offers a history of the Troubles as a whole: the civil rights movement and the turn to violence at the end of the 1960s, the Provisional IRA's bombing campaign, the 1981 hunger strike, the peace process and the opposition it faced within the republican movement, and the post-conflict struggle to understand crimes like McConville's murder. The book also details the efforts of the Belfast Project to research and investigate the events of the conflict. Keefe began researching and writing the book after reading the obituary for Dolours Price in 2013.[2]"
