The ending to that episode is meant to be sweet and touching, and I admit when I saw it as a kid I was tearing up like Jimmy at a....... I dunno, a Roger Ebert convention. Yeah that'll do.
Anyway when you think about it, their parents were basically "I signed away my parental rights".
But it's okay coz the montage at the end shows they cared about her enough to leave a birthday present on the sidewalk for her!!
Wait didn't fatso do that?
So basically they got out of raising her for all the difficult stuff but were there for the feel good bits like giving presents.
And Leela grew into a cold hearted bitch coz of this btw. So no, abandoning her for a "better life" was just a cope to get out of not raising their kid. Her life wouldve been better with her parents.
They're also fat.
