It’s going to be popular for a few months and then slowly fade away into obscurity. Twitter has been fine-tuning their algorithm for over a decade to give users the most possible dopamine. They know all the secrets. Facebook has years of catching up to do and by then, nobody will be using the app anymore.

It's easy to sign up for since it's just an extension of Instagram. Mastadon is too complicated for a lot of people, with admins that are as bad as Reddit mods. I think it will last if it stays non political. Plenty of people who aren't right wing still don't want to deal with the screeching lefties who won't leave Twitter and Reddit alone.

I disagree. Google+ was forced on it’s users (had to have a Google+ to have a youtube channel / comment) and there was no market for it. Why would people use it when they already had Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, etc.

The reason threads could work as opposed to the other Twitter clones is because Instagram / Facebook already have ingrained user bases and because the market is open. With people looking for alternates to Twitter and already having Instagram / Facebook means theres no learning curve or even “platform migration”. Look at something like stories or Instagram direct messages. Stories were copied from Snapchat and direct messages were seen as copies of Twitter. Both were seen as flacid attempts to copy other social media sites but they’re staples for the platform now.

Most of my friends never got on social media in the first place, but those who did have all but abandoned whatever platforms they were on as it’s all grown increasingly political and Boomer-dominated. I must be old now because I can’t relate to the mindset that would get excited about this lame shit.

At least Google+ had some value for SEO. I’m sure Niki Robinson wrote many thought leadership essays about it for top tier media.
