A Clockwork Orange has always been popular with teenagers. ACO posters are (were?) a staple of college houses. It's basically a rebellious teen story but obviously far more twisted.
My entire high school life was based around trying to impress girls who loved that movie. It’s insanely popular with teens
I remember Florentine liked the movie Buffalo 66 so I’m guessing Jim also said it’s one of his favorites.
Is it still popular do you think? Seems some groups just cut off the older stuff. For a while the ACO for teens when I was in high school was (ugh) Boondock Saints. But that might even now be out and old for the younger crowds. My age group also had the Crow which I don’t think younger people are even aware of.
That’s what I mean. I remember Fight Club being a movie like that (albeit less good or edgy). ACO rarely came up for me. Kids weren’t watching Stanley Kubrick in the early 2010s
Are the younger kids still watching Boondock Saints you think? I remember early to mid 2000s that being real cult popular and merch was in places like Hot Topic / Spencer’s but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone under 25 wearing or even mentioning Boondock in years. I’m wondering if cult films are even a thing anyone for younger people.
I’m no expert but it really appears that this marvel/superhero bullshit has really seeped in and obscured other types of movies. I think younger people think that the Nolan Batman movies are the best movies ever made
Most people will just watch whatever is popular and then never think about it again. This isn't really new. Young people weren't sitting around watching Godard twenty years ago. Like anything, cinema is an interest that you need to put time into learning about. You don't just fall into watching Tarkovsky.
I remember my Italian friends all getting together to watch Sopranos every week. Watch Goodfellas and Casino and Donnie Brasco on a loop over and over. One of our stupid Irish friends said we had to watch his "favorite movie" instead of watching Godfather 1&2 or whatever we had planned. So he put Boondock Saints in and literally yelled and laughed like DeNiro in Cape Fear throughout the entire movie. I remember thinking that he might have been clinically retarded.
Yeah that movie kinda blows. DaFoe is the only good thing about it and I hate the scene where he’s dressed as a woman. Even at like 13 I knew that scene was fucking stupid
People that loved Boondock were always such try-hards and fake tough guys. I remember in High School getting into arguments with the die hard’s because I’d just say it’s a cheap knock-off of Reservoir Dogs. I was in high school in the early 2000s when it really took off but it was always the douche guys that thought it was a masterpiece.
I realize that but just wondering if cult movies are still a thing or have new / newer ones come out since it seems like I haven’t heard of any new ones coming out in the last decade or so. I feel like the last one was “The Raid” maybe? Could “Drive” be considered one? Drive wasn’t a huge box office hit but I’m sure has developed a following since it came out.
Drive is a good movie though. Layer Cake is a good movie. Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, American Psycho. Yeah they have some famous actors in them. But they are well made R-rated films for adults. Batman movies are for queers but Christian Bale was hilarious in American Psycho.
